PEI UPSE - Welcome to UPSE

This course is the first step for any member who would like to become involved in PEI UPSE. It is a very informative course for any member who would like to learn more about their union. It is also a pre-requisite for all other PEI UPSE sponsored educationals.

This course includes a history of PEI UPSE, the union’s organizational structure, the role of the steward as well as brief overviews of grievance and bargaining processes.

PEI UPSE – Steward Level I

A member contemplating taking on a Steward role within their local or members who have been elected to the role but have not yet been trained are encouraged to apply. No member may represent PEI UPSE as a Steward until they have taken the mandatory training.

As per PEI UPSE Policy participants must have completed the Welcome to UPSE course before attending any other educational.

PEI UPSE – Steward Level II

This second level course builds on the framework of steward skills established in our Level I course. This course focuses on representation issues: knowing your membership, working with your union executive, grievance preparation, problem solving, conflict resolution and representation skills.

Applicants must have completed the Welcome to UPSE and Steward Level I courses.

PEI UPSE – Steward Level III

CLC and PEI FEDERATION OF LABOUR - Steward Level I

This introductory course provides a solid framework for learning the roles, rights and responsibilities for a steward as a problem solver. The course encourages activism and challenges participants to broaden their understanding of the labour movement in the context of global solidarity with in our communities. New stewards and other union members interested in becoming more active and informed will want to take this course as it focuses on building the leadership and communication skills of participants. Participants should bring their collective agreement with them to this course.

The Steward as Leader is third in a series of CLC Steward courses. Participants should already be well grounded in basic steward training. As per PEI UPSE Policy participants must have completed the Welcome to UPSE course before attending any other educational.

CLC and PEI FEDERATION OF LABOUR - Steward Level III

The Steward as Leader - highlights the basic leadership role of stewards in the local union and the responsibilities that this role entails in the face of a changing union. The theme of this course is how to effectively build a union that is fair and inclusive for all members, what kind of commitments and strategies are required from the steward, the executive of the local and the union itself. Responsibilities such as human rights and the duty of fair representation will be highlighted.

CLC/PEIFL - Mobilizing the Membership

This course deals with the very important issue of recruiting and maintaining local union activists. Discussions focus on how we entice volunteers in our locals to become active, and how we keep them active. The course will also briefly examine how we work within the structure of the labour movement to achieve our goals, how we organize campaigns in our locals, and how we work with other groups outside our local unoins to get our message out. Participants will spend a little tine as well perfecting some of the “tricks” used to prepare ourselves and out mesage for the public and outr members

CLC/PEIFL - Duty to Accomodate

The Duty to accomodate is the faster growing area of labour law. With an ageing population and an increasing awareness of accomodation issues among working people, this course offers a basic understanding of the rights and responsibilities of employees needing accomodation, employers and unions represenatives. It will raise awareness of barriers that persons with disabilities experience in the workplace. Participants will develop action plans. Participants will gain tools on who to make the workplace accessible

PEI UPSE - Steward Level IV

The Steward as Educator - is designed to assist activists develop skills and confidence in educating members around union issues in the workplace, issues that affect the workplace and community issues of the day.

As per PEI UPSE Policy participants must have completed the Welcome to UPSE course before attending any other educational.

PEI UPSE - Voting Delegates

All first time convention delegates, or returning delegates who would like a refresher in parliamentary procedure, are invited to attend this course. This course happens annually in the fall before convention.
