UPSE stands in solidarity with CUPE education workers in Ontario and congratulates them on exercising their constitutional right to strike despite the Ford Government’s use of the notwithstanding clause to impose a contract and ban strike action.
The notwithstanding clause allowed government to violate the constitutional rights of these union members. As a result, unions throughout Ontario and indeed, across the country, supported the CUPE education workers in their protest.
The Ford Government has reconsidered its actions and has made a commitment in writing to withdraw Bill 28, and CUPE has agreed to end the strike and go back to the negotiating table.
